I believe this species, which has unusually triangular leaves and a broad but patchy distribution, is actually an assemblage of hybrids involving various species in the Phlegmariurus crassus and Phlegmariurus brevifolius species groups. Members of the first group have lanceolate leaves and members of the latter group have deltate or suborbicular leaves, and the triangular leaves of Phlegmariurus hohenackeri are intermediate.
