In Flora Mesoamerica, Moran consider these plants to be densely tomentose individuals of H. bogotensis. Schwartsburd argues that H. bogotensis is in fact endemic to the eastern Cordillera of Colombia, and has applied the name H. flexuosa. In Costa Rica, these plants re commonly collected at sites along the Pan-American Highway in the Cordillera Talamanca.
