This subspecies is endemic to southeastern and southern Brazil. Plants are epipetric on sandstone rocks, in shady and moist habitats. The other subspecies (i.e., Alsophila capensis subsp. capensis) occurs in Africa, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Java.
